Trails and Tails...What to Pack for a Hike
We all know that when our furry hiking companions get a sense of a car trip, their excitement is off the charts. To ensure our trail buddies enjoy trekking adventures as much as we do, it’s important to plan ahead and pack the right gear. With proper planning before you hit the trail, you can ensure that your four-legged trail buddy is comfortable, hydrated, nourished and as injury-free as possible.
Before You Go
Before you head out to hit the trail, here are a few key things to get off on the right foot:
Know your route and rules – when selecting a trail, know the specific rules about dogs on the trail as each trail often has its own set of rules. Do they allow dogs on specific days? Do you need to have your pup on a leash? Are any sections restricted? What services are available?
Always carry a leash – you’ll never know when you’ll need to leash up your pup to keep them out of a dangerous situation. We carry the Ruffwear Roamer Leash which can provide you with a hands free experience on the trail with quick clip in and out for your dog.
Packing it in and packing it out – just like you’ll be packing food and water for yourself, you’ll need to do the same for your pup. If you’re doing a longer hike, consider using a day pack for extra food, treats, and water for your dog – especially if it’s going to be warm. We recommend the Front Range Day Pack from Ruffwear.
Bring a bowl – make sure that you bring along a bowl for food and water. You don’t want to be in a situation where your dog has to lap up water from your hands mid-trail. That leads to a mess and water wasted. For shorter hikes, check out the Messy Mutts Stainless Travel Water Bottle with Silicone Flip Up Bowl. For those day long adventures, the Ruffwear Quencher Packable Dog Bowl will be your dog’s best friend.
Protect those paws – if you’re going to be on a more difficult, hot, or rough trail surface, consider a set of trail boots or shoes. Your furry friend and their paws will thank you.
Carry first aid supplies – it’s not just for the scouts anymore and it’s best to be prepared for the worst. Pack a dog first aid kit such as the Dexypaws 24-piece Pet First Aid Kit, and take along a safe tick-removing tool. If you’re going to be on a longer hike where you may be some distance from the trailhead / parking or have the potential for no cell and/or emergency services, plan on a way to carry your pup out if there is a serious injury. The BackTrak Evac Kit from Ruffwear is a must for the unexpected! Do a deeper dive here with Ruffwear.
Leave no trace - don’t forget poop bags and a small trash bag to clean up the mess. Our favorite choice is the Ruffwear Stash Bag Mini Dog Pickup Bag Dispenser.
On the Trail
Now that you’re all packed, it’s time to hit the trail! First and foremost, be mindful of other hikers. You should know the proper protocols for the trails you and your furry pal will be exploring. If your dog will be off leash, ensure that he/she reliably responds to voice commands, which can help keep your pal and the local wildlife safe.
Be sure to keep an eye on your pup as he/she explores. By being proactive, you can often prevent your pup from getting into a dangerous situation – such as wildlife or cliff drop offs – or chewing or swallowing something that they shouldn’t.
If you’re doing a longer trek, take a moment to check your pup for ticks and ensure that their paws are holding up when you stop for a snack/water break.
After the Adventure
Once you’re returned home, take the time to pamper your furry pal a bit. As exciting as all those new smells and noises were, those paws are probably feeling a little ruff after exploring the great outdoors for an extended period of time.
If your adventure had you traversing through sand or mud, a warm soapy bath will be in order. Use a high-quality shampoo specifically designed for pets such as Tropiclean Berry & Coconut Deep Cleansing Pet Shampoo or Skout's Honor Probiotic Dog of the Woods Pet Shampoo & Conditioner – both will make short work of that messy mutt.
A post bath tick check is also a good idea. Most pet first aid kits come with a tick removal tool, but you can also pick up one on its own. If you live in an area prone to fleas and ticks, you should consider an ongoing flea and tick treatment such as Wondercide 'FLEA & TICK' Natural Flea, Tick & Mosquito Control for Dogs, Cats & Home.
Be sure to give your furry pal’s paws some extra attention. I mean, who doesn’t love a foot massage? We stock two great products - Super Snouts Rad Pad Soothing Paw Balm and Skout's Honor Prebiotic Pet Balm – guaranteed to have your buddy rolling over for belly and paw rubs.
With the right planning, you can ensure that your next hiking adventure is fun and enjoyable for the entire pack.
